Classes - Machine Quilting the Appliqué Quilt

Machine Quilting the Appliqué Quilt

Beginner/Intermediate - 1 day

In this workshop explore the options for quilting the appliqué quilt. Outline, echo quilting and designs to enhance this quilt type will be explored. Stipple quilting for the background areas will be covered as well as other interesting options. Also, see what can be added within the appliqué shapes to enhance the quilt. Surface embellishments will be introduced to add interest and texture to the quilt. Students will work on two practice appliqué blocks to learn these techniques. If you love appliqué and have always wanted advice on how to quilt your quilt, this is a perfect workshop for you.

Supply List

Sewing Machine (bring instruction manual, extension bar or table and all accessories) Don’t forget foot pedal and power cord!
Darning Foot- a must for free motion quilting
(Sue prefers an open toe darning foot)
Straight stitch throat plate (optional, bring if you have)
Four 12” squares muslin
Three 12” squares cotton or cotton blend batting
Prepare before coming to class two 12” square appliqué blocks on a light background using the Double Rose pattern and Tulip & Heart pattern provided. **Use your favorite appliqué technique.
25 safety pins (I use size 1)
Sewing machine needles- 80/12 & 70/10 sharp (Schmetz brand called microtex sharp)
Cotton thread- colors to match background and appliqué. I like 50/3 ply, 50/2 ply or 40/3 (I use these brands: Mettler, Aurifil, Superior Masterpiece and King Tut).  I use the thinner threads for stippling and the thicker threads for quilting within the appliqué- bring a variety.
Fabric marking pencil- I use silver and white, Quilters Choice
Ruler- for marking straight lines
Rubber Gloves- kitchen dishwashing gloves, one size smaller than you wear for dishwashing (I use the fingertips for control in free motion quilting)
Basic sewing supplies- scissors or snips, extra bobbins
Extension cord/multi-plug strip
Optional, but a good idea- small cushion for extra height, extra light

*Students can also bring appliqué quilt tops for discussion on how to quilt them.

**Sue’s book “Stitched Raw Edge Appliqué” has an easy machine  appliqué technique for stitching your two appliqué blocks.

“Machine Quilting: A Primer of Techniques” is a companion book for this
workshop- not required
